 "Mac user's review." 2009-12-28
By Shankar Radhakrishnan (Santa Clara, CA)
I bought this drive with 2nd thoughts as I wanted to transfer a number of files, but knowing that it has only USB, not Firewire.

It came pre-formatted with NTFS. Drive was detected immediately without any issue and I can confirm that Western Digital's utilities (which was there) didn't do anything crazy.

I used the disk-utility of Snow Leapord to split that into two - HFS(journaled) and NTFS(which was already there). The utilities that came with the drive, went away and I was able to see the full size of the drive.

But when I started to transfer to the NTFS partition (either from a CD drive or Mac's hard-disk), 'Tuxera NTFS' driver was damn slow. Problem was with tuxera, not the drive as the read/writes on the HFS formatted partition was amazingly fast (to the USB levels).

I gave up and re-formatted the NTFS partition to HFS(non-journaled, as I read that it performs well in a non-server setup). Since then - with two HFS partitions(one journaled and other not) - I've copied more 500GB and its still a work in progress. No issues so far. Transfer rates are decent.

USB cable with the drive is good in length. Indicator light is nice, not bright but responsive. The drive is certainly silent, all the time ( with or without activity )

On the cons :

1) I wish they had given a stand, as I'd like to keep the drive in a vertical position and it saves space. I had one from a previous drive and it works for me now.

2) The power adapter that comes with the drive, looks very cheap. Its not from WD, but from some 3rd party. The user manual talks about switching the power adapter with international ones, but I can't see as how I can remove the plug in the 1st place

While the documentation was more complete, it was simply a plug and use product. Obviously the first usage required the computer to do some initial setup, but that was pretty painless.

 "What I expected" 2009-12-28

The WD Elements 1.5 TB drive was an excellent value at $99 dollars on sale. The drive is somewhat slow, however that makes no difference when my backups are done when I am asleep. The drive is compact and very quiet I would recommend this drive to anyone and in fact have to some of my coworkers.

 "Good product; buried description" 2009-12-28
By C. D. Carter (NC, USA)
So far the drive has been just fine. Plugged it in; it worked with no problems at all. What I DIDN'T know before I bought it was that it required AC power. From the description on the site it sounds like it is strictly a USB device. Buried deep down in the specs are allusions to the AC power supply. I probably would not have bought it had I been sure it was AC powered. I was looking for big ext. HDD that just used USB power like my Toshiba 250GB one. BUT, I'm glad I got it; it was a great deal for a drive with that capacity and it will meet my needs well enough.

 "basic and solid" 2009-12-28
By dionysus (New York , NY)
Since this is for an external back up drive, I was misinformed ( due to missing information in the description )that it did not automatically back up. But... just take less than a minute to manually use it for back ups and it was fine. Hopefully, it will be longer lasting than the Seagate external I drive I had previously. Overall, it is good and solid. It arrived within 1-2 days.
