 "Way too easy!" 2009-12-17
By G. Denny (Northern California)
It works like a charm; you plug it in and leave it alone. One reviewer said it did not back up Thunderbird email files and that's not true, it found everything I wanted backed up including emails and did it quickly and quietly without interfering with what I was doing. When I accessed the drive, it came up quickly, transferred fast and didn't make any noise. I do agree that the flashing blue light on the front can get a bit annoying but simply turning the unit does the trick. If it lasts, it will be perfect!

"HP SimpleSave a bit too simple" 2009-11-30
By S. Horn (Anchorage, Alaska)
My background: Retired Systems Engineer for IBM Corp. Participated in the roll out of the original IBM PC in 1981. PC consultant for 15 years after IBM retirement.

I purchased this backup product in lieu of installing an additional PC with Windows Home Server (WHS) installed. The price was very reasonable for 1TB of storage and the promise of completely automatic backup was an attractive alternative to the effort needed to set up WHS. HP promises that "the software finds all your valuable data, no matter where it is on your computer".

Once plugged in to the USB port, it did indeed begin searching out files to back up. However, the backup list is heavily biased towards Microsoft products such as MSWord and Outlook. The software was not able to find my WordPerfect documents, Quattro spreadsheet files, nor my 5GB of Thunderbird emails. While there is a fairly easy option to add more file extensions to the backup list, the main files in the popular Thunderbird email program do not have file extensions but consist merely of names such as "Inbox", "Sent", and "Trash". Since SimpleSave accepts only the file extension portion of file names, it is not possible to add these plain file names to the backup list in the SimpleSave.

Emails are the most important aspect of my backup so I was reduced to using MS File Manager to perform a manual copy of the appropriate email folders to this backup disk. This process poses two problems: many users would not know which folders to back up for non-Microsoft email programs, and it is not possible to perform an incremental backup which means the entire email folder must be copied each time which can take up to several hours for each backup.

If your needs are limited to backing up Microsoft software products, this product lives up to its name. If, however, your needs go beyond that, you need a backup solution with more adaptability. As for me, I must now extract the 1TB disk from SimpleSave enclosure in order to salvage my investment by installing it in a PC server with WHS or something similar.

Pros:

Inexpensive

Simple

Fully automatic if you stick to Microsoft products

Cons:

Simple use is limited mostly to Microsoft products

Can't be utilized for some popular software.

So simple it can't be adapted to some of the files HP didn't have the foresight to include.

 "So far so good" 2009-11-30

Purchased this product about three months ago. Very easy to use - plug and play. Everything so far is working fine.

 "Win 7 backup problems." 2009-10-31
By Jeffrey Niehaus
I gave this a whirl as it was available at my local Costco. I think it can handle large folders (I cut-and-pasted my C: drive and I suspect that it copied everything it could that wasn't protected) and it will allow Win7 to create a system image although this took a long, long time. However, no matter how much time I give it the thing will hang at 32% or so when trying to back up libraries, or the whole C: disk through the Win7 scheduled backup. Sorry, but I want a schedule-and-forget backup solution and this is not it. (I'm open to the idea that it may not be this drive's fault, but I am currently backing up a music library to an old external drive and it's going swimmingly.)

Also, the HP "super simple" software is downright vampire-like. I cannot be eliminated or killed. However, once I decided to give in and embrace its functions, I realized that it had stopped responding and wouldn't start. Sigh. Back to Costco!

 "Horrifically Slow" 2009-10-29
By bhartsb
Pros: Quiet

Cons: Horrifically slow. Average speed when transferring 70GB was ~8MB/sec.

The blinking blue light during transfers is annoying.
