Long time Amazon buyer, first time review writer. I read the reviews on troubles with sleep mode, but since my MacBook Pro (running Snow Leopard) doesn't sleep (sleep mode is turned off so it can be backed up at night), I thought it wouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately, the drive has three times disconnected unexpectedly on me (twice when it was idle, and once when I was using iMovie to capture video). The first two times I simply disconnected/reconnected the 800MB firewire cable and the drive was remounted. The third time, even that didn't work. I unplugged/replugged the power cord and the drive still didn't mount (the light was off). When I turned off my camcorder, all of a sudden the drive spun up and mounted. This gave me quite a scare since I had my only copy of over 500GB of video on the drive. A drive that doesn't reliably stay connected to your PC doesn't deserve more than one star.

Had this drive almost four months now. Was a very loyal Seagate customer when I bought this. Shortly after I heard about troubles with alot of the Seagate drives. One of my retail shops even ditched the brand for new installs.
The drive is fast no doubt about that, but I think that given the reliability issues I might face, I am spurred to buy its twin for redundancy.
Dual backup between firewire 800 devices. Should be nice.
Oh, and the sleep issue? So far, it wakes when my mac mini wakes. No probs there. I also turned on Wake-On-LAN so when I try to access data from one of my Windows 7 machines, its accessible. So far, so my first Apple experience, I'm satisfied. Not thrilled but satisfied.
Off to Best Buy to get my second one.

Love the ginormous storage space on this external hard drive. The upright stand makes it easy to tuck in on the shelf next to my printer. With my MacBook Pro, it was literally just plug in, choose the Seagate as my backup device, and relax. (It's better to have all devices plugged in before you power up your laptop - it instantly recognizes new devices that way.)
Would purchase from this vendor again.

I needed a drive to replace my WD My Book which has failed to show up on my desktop. Fortunately I just use my backup drive to create a duplicate of my mac's hard drive. Did a little research and Seagate has the highest reliability rating. So far it's been working great. It doesn't get any easier.

My external HDDs in use now total 4, and I wanted a sleek vertical form factor so that I could line them all up in a small space under the desk where they will be cool, protected and out of the way. The soft white glow from under the base and from the Seagate logo bathes one of the darkest places in the house with convenient and aesthetic walkway lighting when the computer is turned off or the drives are in use. Silent for practical purposes, I've not yet known them to overheat. The rest is speed, which is constrained by the cable standard in use, and reliability. As to the latter, all I can say is "so far so good" after about 6 weeks.
