"Avoid like the plague" 2009-12-18By
Mel D. (California)
I've never bought a product from a reputable manufacturer and been so sorely disappointed by the open box experience. I bought my last Seagate 300GB firewire/usb2 at Fry's back in 2005 and it's been a champ.
This FreeAgent Extreme drive has got so many basics wrong:
- first, the power adapter fits loosely in wall socket
- the stand does not snap securely into place (this unit is quite heavy!)
- the rubber feet (alternative to stand) merely squeeze on (you know you're going to lose them later)
- the firewire cable fits loosely in both the jack on the motherboard and the drive itself
Of course there is no power switch, no eSATA cable in the box and the instructions are beyond terrible. They have tried to use pictographs like a lot of Japanese electronics manuals but failed in the attempt. They've had to add a lot of text in about 10 languages to explain what's going on which makes the booklet very hard to read. The most confusing section was the clock icon showing 15 minutes of time passage with 02:00 written below it. What is that supposed to mean and it's shown happening after you plug int the drive for the first time?
After waiting 5+ minutes for the drive to appear on the desktop via the firewire cable, I launch Disk Utility and there is no external mechanism listed. So I try combinations of unplugging the cable, powering the drive first, etc. Still no luck.
I then try the USB cable without luck. The drive does not make the normal startup sounds and the activity/power light has not even flashed one time so far. So I try the firewire cable again without luck. When I unplugged the power cord the drive could be heard making a singing noise (only firewire power at this point). When I unplugged the firewire cable it went away and returned when I plugged the only that cable back in. Wonderful...
Since my 300GB Seagate works fine and exhibits no such problems on my computer this drive appeared to be DOA. RMA time? Before I went that route, I tried one more time, first connecting the USB cable and then powering up the drive and voila, the light finally comes on and the factory formatted volumes appear. I reformat the drive HFS+ and only then am I able to use the firewire cable to connect the drive to the computer. What a complete hassle!
I don't like anything about this product. There are much better options at this price point (e.g. G-Drives are awesome).
Avoid like the plague.
"Problems with Windows 7" 2009-11-13By
Aldus Huxley (Antarctica)
This drive worked great with Windows Vista (one of the few things that worked great with Vista), but I am having problems since upgrading to Windows 7.
I am using a firewire connection. So far, the only way to get the drive to work is to either uninstall the driver and reboot windows, or unplug the power cord and plug it back in. This works, but after a while, Windows stops seeing the drive again.
Microsoft has been of no help (surprise), but Seagate tech support has responded to email. I will update this review when there is a status change.

This is a follow up on the status of this drive.
Seagate has ended up being of very little help. In fact, the only thing they really did was blame the computer manufacture, and finally, Microsoft. Consequently, I ended up updating all software (bios, etc) available for the computer and everything available from Microsoft (drivers, etc). None of these steps helped.
When I told Seagate about the steps I had performed, they still tried to blame anything, and everything, except the hard drive. Even after I ran a diagnostic program that indicated the drive was faulty, they denied anything was wrong with the drive.
Finally, I insisted that I wanted a replacement, and they agreed. They were not the least bit friendly about this. Now, I get to ship the drive back to Seagate at my expense. In addition, they will not ship a replacement until they receive the old drive.
This is the second defective Seagate drive I have gotten in just over two years. I would think twice about purchasing this drive, or any other Seagate product.
I will update this posting when I get the new drive.

Well, so much for returning this hard drive. I am missing one document from the box this drive came in. Seagate will not accept exchanges unless everything (I.E. every document, ETC) is returned.
Since I am stuck with this drive, I decided to try using it on an XP machine. You guessed it, the drive is having problems with XP as well.
Do not waste your money on Seagate products.

"Fairly simple to use, okay build quality, very nice warranty." 2009-10-06By
R. HiranakaLet me preface my review by stating that I received this drive as a certified refurbished model from Seagate as a warranty replacement. Given that the old drive was over 2 years old and only 750 GB I don't feel much like complaining.
The drive enclosure itself is plastic. It feels sturdy enough, but my previous one was aluminum and had great heat dissipation. Since this drive does not include a fan I am moderately concerned for its long term durability, especially when transferring huge blocks of data at a time. It has a fairly loud wind up noise when you first plug it in, but afterward you'll only ever hear a whispering hum for the most part.
The software appears to be simple enough to use. The encryption feature seems a bit too open for my tastes, but that's what Truecrypt is for. The software also includes a diagnostic test for the drive which somehow thought my drive was failing every other day. After several sweeps using Windows disk check and a few third party programs I suspect that it's wrong. The backup feature is fairly simple to use, and I had no problems with it when I had it installed.
The 5 year warranty that they offer is quite nice. I'm not sure of any other manufacturer that has such a lengthy warranty for an external drive. The warranty process is fairly simple and consists of inputting a few minor details and the drive serial number into their website. The drive they'll send back is refurbished (which seems to be the industry standard), and if they don't have the exact model you sent them they'll probably upgrade you (which they did for me). You can also pay $20 to have them ship the new drive over to you with 2 day shipping allowing you to backup the data on your old drive and wipe out the data for your security.
Overall a pretty good drive, and great warranty.
"1 Star... Really!?" 2009-09-21By
Justin J. Slomski (Wisconsin)
The ONLY reason someone would give this a 1 star is because theyre biased. This HDD works perfect. Works Over seas in the dust/sand/dirt. Its quiet. Plenty of ports. Have had mine a few months now. Works perfectly. No reason to give this other than 5 stars... None.
